DEARBORN, Michigan – January is School Board Recognition Month and the Dearborn Public Schools is joining 552 local and 57 intermediate school districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their untiring dedication to public education.
“On behalf of the staff, students, and parents I want to thank our Board members for their service to our community and the hours of time they have dedicated to making the Dearborn Public Schools a great place for children to learn,” commented Mr. Brian Whiston, Superintendent of the Dearborn Public Schools.
In Dearborn, School Board Trustees oversee both the K-12 district and serve as Trustees to Henry Ford Community College. They must also balance family and career demands while pursing their own professional development to stay on top of the ever-changing education landscape. School Board members develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. They bear responsibility and oversight of 19,000 students, 2,300 employees, 35 buildings, and an annual budget of $200 million.
The Dearborn Board of Education began the new year with a brief organizational meeting prior to the start of the regular Board meeting. The Board selected new officers to serve for the 2012 year. Veteran Board member Ms. Mary Lane was selected to be President. Ms. Pamela Adams was named Vice-President, Mr. Hussein Berry Secretary, and Mr. Joseph Guido will take on the role as Treasurer. Board members serve in their officer position for one year but are elected to serve on the Board for a four-year period.
Before turning over the reins, outgoing Board President James Schoolmaster gave the oath of office to returning Board member Joseph Guido and newly elected Board member Ms. Roxanne McDonald. Both Board members were victorious in the November election. As he starts his 19th year, Mr. Guido is the longest serving member of the Board. Although serving her first term Ms. McDonald is no stranger to the district. She has served on several committees and is the Vice-President of the PTSA Executive Counsel.
Dearborn Board of Education members bring a variety of professional expertise and practical experience to the job. School Board members serving the students in the Dearborn Public Schools are:
