DEARBORN, Mich. – To accommodate the active lifestyles of people entering their senior years, the retirement community of Oakwood Common, located on Rotunda Drive in Dearborn, is beginning a major renovation project.
According to Mary Granata, Oakwood Common’s manager of sales, active senior communities have primarily served the “GI Generation,” people born between 1901 and 1924. Now, they are attracting more residents from the “Silent Generation,” those born between 1925 and 1945 who are seeking additional amenities.
“They’re asking us for more flexibility and choices—especially areas in which to socialize,” said Granata. “We’re excited that this renovation will enhance and fulfill many of our current and potential residents’ requests.”
Called the “Bistro” renovation project, Oakwood Common’s current café, private dining room and fitness areas will be redesigned to include a comfortable lounge with bar and fireplace to socialize with friends and family.
The café is being transformed into a bistro with the installation of new energy efficient equipment and a pizza oven to provide a more diverse menu. At the same time, the new fitness room will accommodate residents’ requests for more exercise options as well as an area to receive massages.
The billiard room will also be moved to a newly redesigned area for the community’s avid pool players and enable the current room to be eventually transformed into a theater for residents.
While renovations are underway, residents and guests will have the opportunity to observe the changes through specially-made portholes built into temporary walls. Project completion is expected by early spring.
“There’s a lot of excitement about the plans among our residents and staff,” added Granata. “We’re working hard to minimize any inconvenience during the construction and look forward to hosting a ribbon cutting and open house to showcase these beautiful new activity and social areas.”
