DEARBORN, Michigan – The Inter-Service Club Council of Dearborn recently honored members of their individual organizations who represent exemplary commitment to their group and the community.
Of those eight outstanding members who volunteer so much time and effort, Barry Hawthorne, a member of the Dearborn Optimist Club, was chosen as the 2014 Service Person of the Year. Hawthorne has volunteered in the community serving with the Optimist Club as president for two terms and vice president for three terms. He chairs the Respect for Law Committee and also was the Dearborn Optimist of the Year in 2009.
The driving force behind programs such as the Junior Optimist Club and the Respect for Law Program that honors police officers and firefighters, Hawthorne also raises funds for the Optimist Club annual golf outing.
He oversees the organization’s art, oratory and essay contests for students.
Hawthorne is responsible for management, operation, administration and education at the Advanced Technology Academy and has been a leader in public education. He also supports the Dearborn Symphony and The Henry Ford.
