DEARBORN, Michigan – Track or Treat! No this isn’t a misprint, it is the official name for an October 26th event taking place at Penn Vasser Park from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. Your children or grandchildren will have an absolute ball visiting trick or treat booths set up around the walking and bike track.
This will mark the first year for this event. Along with lots of candy, food and beverages, there will be “best Costume” prizes along with games. This event is just another in a long list of fun and charitable events that the Southwestern Outer Drive Neighborhood Association (SODA) have organized this year.
There is still room for those who wish to volunteer to pass out candy for this event. We are accepting donations from individuals, churches, Boy and Girl Scout clubs, business’ basically anyone who wants to jump on board and be a part of something special.
Serving as President of SODA has been an extremely rewarding experience for me. This Association was defunct and inactive for many years, before Michele Featherston and a few others revived it about a year ago. Our goal in the first year is to bring SODA back to the glory years of Dearborn neighborhood activity. You can already see the impact SODA has had on the neighborhood East of Telegraph, South of Michigan Ave and West of Pelham.
SODA held a fundraiser in the spring for a little neighborhood boy who had cancer. The event raised over $10,000.00! That is a large sum for just a neighborhood association. We have teamed with the Whitmore Bolles elementary PTA and had many amazing events. My favorite part about serving this association has been watching the good folks who live here join together and work to make a difference.
Aside from hosting fun events, SODA is working to establish a better relationship with those who lead our city. We have cracked down a crime at Penn Vasser Park through a cooperative relationship with Greg Orhner, the Park and Rec division and Dearborn Police.

It just feels different now that SODA is formed. Residents are reaching out to one another again, connecting again and looking out for one another. This is only our first year and I could write a book about the impact this neighborhood association has made. Next year looks even brighter.
