DEARBORN, Michigan – Twelve sculptures have been placed throughout Dearborn as part of the community’s 2012-2013 Art in Public Places – Midwest Sculpture Initiative (MSI). Funding for the project is provided by the Dearborn Community Fund and the East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities. Each month a different sculpture and sculptor are highlighted.
“Geometric Construction” by Michigan sculptor Ray Katz is the featured sculpture for January. The sculpture is installed on the Plaza behind the Schaefer Building located at Michigan Ave. and Schaefer in East Dearborn.
Constructed from fabricated steel, the painted welded piece is 5 feet tall by 12 feet wide by 5 feet wide. The piece is priced at $25,000.
Katz has created his sculptures in a studio located in Pontiac, Mich., for more than 30 years. While he has worked in many mediums, he believes metal to be best suited for his work.
“Abstract” is the word to best describe Katz’s work. Over the past 10 years he has focused on outdoor installations and public sites, creating pieces that range in size, contrast and interactive compositions.
Katz’s work has been featured in exhibitions throughout Michigan including at the Birmingham Bloomfield Arts Center, Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph), and as part of a Sculpture Tour sponsored by Western Michigan University. Beyond Michigan, his work has been selected for exhibitions at the International Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL), Polk Museum of Art (Lakeland, FL), Art in Public Places at Texas A & M University (College Station, TX) among others. In 2006, his Transformation 2, a welded aluminum construction was included in the Kajima International Sculpture Competition Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan and Osaka, Japan.
