DEARBORN, Michigan – A group of anti-Islamic protesters, led by Ruben Israel of the official street preachers used a pig’s head on a pole as a “conversation starter” at Dearborn’s 17th Annual International Arab Festival on June 15th. Some local Christians and Muslims were offended by the pig’s head on display, while many others were incredulous and could not believe it actually happened. Photos provided by Richard Abdullah reveal more details about the incident.
A smoldering fire in the blogosphere continued to spark outrage and controversy in Dearborn and around the country this past week – after The United West released a YouTube video entitled American Muslims Stone Christians in Dearborn, MI on June 26. (The video had 405,000 views on Friday morning, and over 640,000 views by early Sunday morning, July 1st.) A related story, ‘American Muslims Stone Christians‘, by Alan Kornman of the United West focused on the assaults suffered by the Christian protesters, with statements like “The multiple violent attacks on Mr. Ruben Israel and his friends was the most violent to date at the Arab Festival. The fact the violence by the predominately Muslim crowd against Christians was allowed to continue freely under the watchful eye of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is criminal. ” Kornman makes no mention of the pig’s head on a pole in his article.
A story in World Net Daily, entitled ‘See Muslim Mob Stone Christians In US‘, made no mention of the pig’s head, and focused on the mob violence. “According to the tape, the mob began chucking more stones, bottles and debris as the Christians were injured… Israel explains that the mob throws things and becomes more aggressive when police leave the scene.”
The pig’s head on a pole is clearly visible in several YouTube videos, including a longer video clip (over one hour) released by Itching Ears Ministry, and another video clip (warning – foul language and disturbing images).
UPDATE 1-July-2012 at 3:37pm – recent comments by readers are typical (and demonstrate) why we had to investigate this story in more depth, to discover what really happened:
Genie: To all the other Christians on this thread: If you think that going into an Arab festival with a pig’s head on a stake, and hurling insults at people through a megaphone is “going forth to share Christian love” I would like to know what Christian denominations you belong to which teach this as a way to win hearts over to Christ, so that I can avoid them.
Barry’s reply to Genie: Does it bother you at all to make up these absolute bogus LIES to try and JUSTIFY your muslim god of perverseness and constant war/slaughtering of innocent people? TO ALL PEOPLE READING THIS THREAD IF A PIGS HEAD WAS AT THIS EVENT A MUSLIM TERRORIST BROUGHT IT!
This type of ignorance (Barry’s reply) can be found in Dearborn, and throughout the United States. What will they say next? “I will only believe the story about the pig’s head if I can stick my finger in it’s nose.”
Local activist Kristyn Taylor said Dearborn needs to Set Ground Rules for handling situations like this.
There is a video currently circulating that is raw footage taken by a group called the Itching Ears Ministry who attended the Arab International Festival in Dearborn this past month. I wasn’t there at the time, and there are conflicting reports of if and to what extent this group incited the crowd at the festival to react violently. The video shows people throwing bottles. The physical response was wrong and needs to be addressed. However, this is not the first group that has come to Dearborn to make a statement about how right they are and how wrong we are.
I say “we” because this is what this post is all about (I know, took me long enough!). Dearborn is a city made up of Arabs (Lebanese, Iraqis, Iranians, Libyans, Syrians, Palestinians, Yemeni, Egyptian, and every other segment of the Arab population), Italians, Europeans, Jews, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Heterosexuals, Homosexuals, and everyone else I can’t list here because it will go on forever. What happens to any one of us in Dearborn happens to all of us. We each are a reflection of this city, what it stands for, and what we can be. Right now, I think we can do better.
The reaction to the video is probably the most shocking of all. It doesn’t take much until, all of a sudden, it’s “those Arabs” and how cruel and mean they are that is the problem in Dearborn. The solution? With that kind of thinking, I don’t think there can be a solution besides more hate and division which will eventually turn this city upside down.
Change comes quicker with things we can impact most directly. I can’t control who comes into Dearborn and what message they have to bring. But I can choose how I respond and what message my response makes. The same way we should not have to stand for being a playground for those who simply want to stir the pot and capitalize on the reaction, we should not have to stand for the division and hatred felt among the different communities within our borders. Instead of relegating the problem to one sector of the city and blame them for their action or inaction, let’s get together to talk about how the problem affects us all and reach a solution or two.
The bottom line is, I think Dearborn is a great place to live and has incredible potential. I am willing to work with every person in Dearborn to figure out how we can reach that potential. But, there is no room for racism or bigotry. We can have a frank conversation about the differences and problems our community faces and how to solve them without hateful rhetoric.
Sometimes, to reach that point, we need to take a close look at ourselves and be honest about what we are really saying.
It’s time to Set Ground Rules for how we address problems in Dearborn and in America.

WND ran with this racist story and only provided the video part of Christians being pelted.
They are responsible for lieing to their readers and now everyone should see them for the slime they are for fueling the hate of the Arabs and Muslims.
Joseph Farrah should openly apologize for doing this if he is a man of faith as he claims.
The Chrisitan readers should also be apologized to for inciting hatred and making this situation magnified.

I am surprised that my comment is posted here, but if it helps get the point across.that this was not any type of Christian ministry I’m thankful that you used it.
There is no excuse for this type behavior on the part of people claiming to be Christians, and no excuse for sites such as WND to publish the video without all the facts.

It doesn’t mater if the Christians had 10 pig heads on poles! Or 20! What matters is that crowd needed to understand that it must behave itself – take the “higher road”, as it were. I’m pretty sure that if Muslims were shouting insults around a Christian festival, the police would have told the Christians exactly that. (Oh, and this does happen in Muslim countries all the time!). When ANY group is given a “pass” on behavior, it will always gain strength. In time, they will feel entitled and begin to act outside of the law…

I wonder what would happen if these Christians pulled the same stunt in Crown Heights in NYC? The reaction from the hate-o-sphere is predictable.

Wonderful! Could you please fill in the missing gaps of your poorly researched article?
Number one, after “genie” submitted nearly NINETY comments to the WMD article, it was a growing consensus they may have been an Islamic apologist, and frankly, genie’s repetitious and constant claim that the pig head somehow justified the muslims vial, bloody violence, was getting very old on the forum? Plus, since “genie,” translated – jinn in the Koran is used to represent “satan” and the supposed evil subhuman species created by their allah, a.k.a. Muhammad, (see: en.wikipedia DOT org/wiki/Jinn) it seemed we may have been getting spammed by a muslim apologist. I, and many others were sick enough of the repeated posts to call genie about anything at that point. Liar seemed the least offensive since my Lord hates swearing. And I hereby come to give a “partial” apology for the accusation?
So, I took the time to do the media’s (your) job, and found this genie to be quite credible in commenting on most subjects (that media like you hide from citizens to drive them to be in love with the democrat party’s bizarre, neo-communist-fascism.) so I don’t think genie is sublimely trying to justify Islam, at least not, purposefully. “genie” simply doesn’t believe or understand the whole pig issue, nor that, since they (genie) claims to be Christian, are themselves, a pig or, from the stock of a pig and or monkey or a “kaffer” meaning, the lowliest form of scum on the planet, – according to islam’s Koran.
Nor do they (or you) understand the significance of it being presented by Christians/infidels/unbelievers, at a muslim festival of hate for the country that’s giving them so much.
Hence, genie is wrong on the issue of defending this Islamic tripe in the video, pigs head or not. Indeed, if shock will finally get people’s attention, especially the people of Dearborn, then bring on the pig heads! Personally, I would have chosen showing the people of Dearborn the video and claims of muslims proudly explaining how they force mothers to cut the heads off their own recently sodomized-by-muslims, children? Maybe THAT would wake people up to the truth about islam? Of course, you – like muslims, don’t want the people of Dearborn to know about those (peaceful) things do you? See ya over at WND genie, (where the truth is) and God (the real One) bless all you do for the Kingdom!

Kathy, I beg to differ. It does matter that they went into that festival with the express purpose of instigating trouble. There was nothing Christian about their behavior, and as I understand it, this incident took place only after 3 days of constant verbal attacks and insults by Mr. Israel and his band of idiots.
The violence was extreme, but the anger was completely justified.

Wow “Barry.”. What does that incoherent rant have to do with the gaps you allege are in this article? You barely make sense. Back away from the hate sites and get some fresh air.

This is rediculous. What these Christian protestors did was wrong. However; the violence that occured from the locals was also wrong. Protests happen all over this country. Many are very wrong. The law is still the law. No matter what some one says you can’t get violent. It is also important to respect the locals in any community.

Yeah I tried to post the pictures of the guy with the head of the pig at WND and they didn’t allow them. Seems they are not a free of a site as they claim: about WND: “seeking truth and justice and revitalizing the role of the free press as a guardian of liberty. We remain faithful to the traditional and central role of a free press in a free society – as a light exposing wrongdoing, corruption and abuse of power”.I watched the long version of the video just to see where the pig head was in the story.WND only had the short version and like another commenter said WND made no mention of the pig head.Looks like they left something out on purpose to incite anger. From what I saw it looks like that’s all they wanted to do was to ignite anger with the head and their speech.Didn’t come off as very Christian to me.Seemed more like something the KKK would have done minus the hoods over their heads.
