DEARBORN, Mich. – More than 40 people including wartime veterans, spouses, caregivers and social workers attended a March workshop at Oakwood Common to learn about the Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension benefit. A second workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Oakwood Common, located at 16351 Rotunda Drive in Dearborn.
“We’ve had an overwhelming response,” said Mary Granata, Oakwood Common’s director of sales. “This is a benefit that helps people cover the cost of care and assistance for daily living activities whether they’re living in a retirement community or at home.
The Aid and Attendance (A&A) Pension benefit provides up to $1,704/month for wartime veterans, up to $1,095/month for surviving spouses and up to $2,020/month for qualifying couples.
Stanley Piestrak, Jr., whose mother is a resident at Oakwood Common, attended the March workshop.
“My dad was on the beach at Normandy during World War II, and this benefit could help cover the cost of additional care that my mom receives here,” said Piestrak.
Pat Olszewski, caregiver to her 89 year old mom who lives at home, was interested in learning about the benefit for home care services.
“It was a very informative workshop,” said Olszewski. “Every veteran and survivor should be aware of the benefits that are available to them.”
Presenting the workshops are Beth Marshall and Dwight Cloutier from the Veteran Support Center. Representatives from Oakwood Common and Oakwood’s Senior Care Solutions are also available to talk about the services they provide.
Attendees receive information about how to qualify and complete the VA forms at absolutely no cost.
