DEARBORN, Michigan – The African and African American Studies program of the University of Michigan – Dearborn joins Mahogany Jones’s Pure Purple Awareness Weekend as the co-sponsor of the Public Pillow Fight for Domestic Violence (DV), Saturday, October 18th, 2014.
They join other sponsors Mahogany Jones, P.O.S.itive Native Initiative, The Foundation: Celebrating Women in Hip Hop, and The Yuinon in hosting this pillow fight fundraiser. The Women’s Resource Center of Michigan’s Dearborn campus will also be participating as a sponsor.
Why a Public Pillow Fight? Because fighting does not belong in the bedroom and healthy conversations about domestic abuse need to become a part of the public discourse. This event serves as a fundraiser for the YWCA Interim House, Detroit’s only Domestic Violence Shelter as well as day 2 of the cell phone drive for Verizon Wireless HopeLine.
Everyone is invited to participate and pick up resources for themselves or a friend and join in a Pillow Talk Q&A Open Forum to gain understanding about Domestic Abuse and what we can all do to help, lead by the Women’s Resource Center. The Yuinon, will be leading discussions on healthy relationship with any attending youth. Counselors will be on hand to provide more support. The event is open to youth because teenagers and college students represent the most affected demographic.
Mahogany Jones will be performing along with the women of The Foundation. The PURE Purple Awareness Weekend kicks off Friday with the PURE Purple Soiree Masked Party at Drive Table Tennis Social Club benefiting HandsBags of Hope.
