DEARBORN, Michigan – Roger Miller, Dearborn resident and owner of Spectrum Signs & Designs, was recently honored as 2013 Person of the Year by the Inter-Service Club Council (ISCC) of Dearborn for his outstanding volunteer service and contributions to the community. The award was presented at the November luncheon that recognized nominees from each of Dearborn’s service organizations.
Nominated by the Rotary Club of Dearborn, Miller currently serves as club treasurer, a position he has held for 11 years. He previously served as club president (1985-86) and as Dearborn Rotary Foundation president (1989-90).
According to Dearborn Rotarian Susan Surducan, Miller is involved in almost every activity of the Dearborn Rotary Club. “He is our ‘go-to’ guy for guidance and is often the first to volunteer,” said Surducan.
The Club’s biggest community service project of the year is “Santa Snaps,” picture-taking with Santa, during the annual Wayne County Festival of Lights. Miller plays the pivotal role in organizing and setting up the Santa stage and decorations, and then taking down and storage for the next year.
The Hugh Archer Memorial Golf Outing is another favorite project of Miller, who is known as the driving force behind the success of this annual fundraiser that helps to raise funds for scholarships that go to deserving Dearborn high school seniors.
As the former owner of Harry Miller Florists, Miller was very active on the state and local level of the floral society. He also helped run several Dearborn school millage elections, participating in a variety of school activities when his children were young. A member of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Centurion Club, Miller has provided services, at no charge or discounted, to a variety of organizations within the community.
“It is difficult for us to put into words how much Roger means to Dearborn Rotary,” added Surducan. “This kind of dedication to a service organization and our city, resulting in the betterment of others, is worthy of praise.”
