DEARBORN, Michigan – This summer continues to post record intake of animals in the Shelter and homes are needed for the many hopeful pets in their care. To help encourage prospective pet owners to consider adopting, Westborn Mall offered to be the host venue for the “There’s No Place Like Home” Adopt-A-Thon, taking place this Saturday, August 25th from 9am-9pm. Located at the intersection of Outer drive and Michigan avenue, Westborn Mall is very accessible and offers lots of traffic during the busy Back to School shopping window.
For the Adopt-A-Thon, the Shelter is reducing adoption fees by 50% (Saturday only), plus offering baked goods for sale from Fido Bakery, as well as selling Shelter merchandise. There will be specials in the Mall from participating retailers and WYCD 99.5 FM; Detroit Country will be there from 2pm-4pm, with on-air talent Rachael Hunter.
Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter said, “Back to School is known as a shopping season, but in the Sheltering industry, it also represents a peak in adoption time. Families are back from summer vacation and ready to bring a new pet family member into their homes before school starts. We hope to find matches this Saturday for homeless animals and families looking for a new loved one.” The Shelter will have a large tent in the parking lot on the frontage of Westborn Mall.
Currently, the Dearborn Animal Shelter is in the midst of the $100K Challenge from Rachael Ray and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). During the three months of August, September and October, the Shelter must increase the number of adopted animals by at least 300 compared to last year to be in contention for grant money up to $100,000. This Adopt-A-Thon with Westborn Mall is one of the ways the Shelter hopes to increase adoptions.
