LIVONIA, Michigan – Co-op Services Credit Union recently awarded a total of $14,000 in scholarships to seven graduating high school seniors from the Detroit metro area.
This marks the 18th year of the scholarship awards program that was established to honor longtime Co-op Services’ volunteers and to recognize outstanding students who are also credit union members. Over the years, the credit union has awarded $170,000 in scholarship funds.
Scholarship recipients and their parents were honored at Co-op Services annual meeting with the theme of “People over Profits.”
“Our credit union has a strong commitment to making a personal connection with each member to help them achieve their dreams,” said Lisa Fawcett. “While these scholarships are not based on financial need, many of these students and their families shared how much these awards will go toward helping them receive a college education and help ensure their dreams.”
The $4,000 Al Williams scholarship was awarded to Dearborn resident Michelle Kerr of Divine Child High School. Canton resident Evan Joseph received the $4,000 Harlan Richardson Scholarship and Hunter McDaniel of Farmington Hills received the $3,000 Dutch Farr Scholarship. Both Joseph and McDaniel are students at Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi.
Winners of the $1,000 Mark Stroebel and Margaret Kremer-Hehman Scholarships were Livonia residents Tanim Islam and Kyle Swinkin of Stevenson High School.
Anne Okonowski, a senior at Divine Child High School and a resident of Dearborn received the $500 William Allen Scholarship. Novi resident Hayley C. Wilk from Novi High School received the $500 James Cullimore Scholarship.
Beginning in November 2012, applications and details about scholarship awards for 2013 graduating high school seniors will be available on Co-op Services Credit Union’s website, www.cscu.org.
