DEARBORN, Michigan – After a two-year experiment the Dearborn Board of Education will change the format of their second meeting of the month from a study session back to the traditional Board meeting format.
The study session format provided more time for the Board and administration to engage in in-depth conversations regarding reports brought forth at the meeting. Although everyone enjoyed the more informal atmosphere and opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, the meeting did not allow time for other business items to be voted on by the Board.
“With 19,000 students, 2,300 employees, and a $200 million budget the district has a lot of personnel, student, academic, and operational items that need Board approval. Moving back to the traditional Board meeting format twice a month allows us to bring items to the Board on a more consistent and timely schedule as opposed to waiting and then loading up one agenda at the beginning of the month,” commented Mr. Brian Whiston, Superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools.
The two meetings a month will still begin at 7:00 pm, allowing plenty of time for the Board and administration to discuss items and reports brought to the meeting. Topics tentatively scheduled to be discussed at upcoming meetings include:
- Brain Research / 2-27-12
- ESL Teacher Endorsement / 2-27-12
- Early Childhood Study / 2-27-12
