DEARBORN, Michigan – If you use a Kindle e-reader, mobile smart phone, or a PC or MAC computer — and you are a Dearborn Public Library cardholder, you can now use the Dearborn Public Library’s Digital Catalog and Download Center to search for and check out free eBooks.
In fact, patrons can now download popular and classic eBooks to any mobile device, such as iPhone®, iPad®, Android™, or PC/Mac computer by downloading and using the free Kindle app.
Kindle book technology is very powerful and easy to use. Patrons can browse the Dearborn Public Library’s collection of bestselling and classic eBooks from a PC or Mac computer, check out titles using a library card, and select “Get for Kindle” to deliver eBooks to their Kindle device or any device running the free Kindle app.
Users who enjoy eBooks on Kindle will benefit from Amazon’s Whispersync technology that synchronizes notes, highlights and last page read between their Kindle and free Kindle apps.
“We really anticipate a busy holiday season for eBook readers as gifts,” said Library Director Maryanne Bartles, “and we are thrilled that Kindle readers can now be used with our Digital Catalog. We have so many excellent, free titles to offer our patrons.”
Patrons do need to remember that this is still a public library service even though it is a digital service, meaning that just as patrons may be put on a waiting list to read a popular print book, they would likely need to wait their turn for the digital version of that same book. The difference is that there are no overdue fees nor can the book be damaged or lost.
To meet this increased demand on eBooks, the library plans to purchase extra copies of popular titles for their patrons. In addition, the staff will offer technology training sessions to assist patrons with learning how to use their devices with the library’s service.
