DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn Recreation’s Cultural Arts Division announces opportunities in the arts for individuals of all ages. The City of Dearborn offers many affordable, enriching possibilities for Winter and Spring of 2011at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center (The Center).
Musically speaking, the Dearborn Community Chorus, Vanguard Voices and the Dearborn Youth Symphony offer performance opportunities through membership or audition for their second session.
The Dearborn Community Chorus (DCC) welcomes all, ages 16 and older, who love to sing. The group rehearses weekly beginning in January and presents a major performance at The Center in May.
Vanguard Voices is a 70-voice, adult mixed choir sponsored by the Dearborn Recreation Department and is choir-in-residence at Henry Ford Community College. Its artistic director is G. Kevin Dewey, and interested members must audition. Weekly three-hour rehearsals prepare the group for a season of concerts.
Dearborn Youth Symphony (DYS) provides young performers with symphonic ensemble experience. Members range from 8 to 22 years of age and represent more than 25 communities within the metropolitan area. The DYS also rehearses on Monday evenings and performs at The Center. Interested young musicians can audition for the DYS ensembles which include a string concert orchestra, symphony orchestra, and flute choirs.
The Dearborn Theatre Program offers acting classes on Saturdays including Preschool Playhouse, Kiddie Kafe Performance classes for youth, Teen Acting Workshops and Adult Acting Classes taught by Metro Detroit’s theatrical talent.
Visual Arts classes for ages 16 and up being offered in 2011 include Ceramics in January, and Wading in Watercolors in March. Each six-week class will occur on Monday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. and registration fees include materials.
Mini ArtVentures, taking place over three consecutive evenings provides teens, adults, and senior residents with a chance to discover life enhancing experiences through the arts. The first Mini ArtVenture entitled Bookmaking Techniques taught by Wendy Sample, occurs from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Center on March 29, 30, and 31. Creative Writing also held at The Center from 6 to 8 p.m. will be repeated on April 12, 13, and 14 with instructor, Anne Gautreau.
