According to newly released FBI statistics for 2010, anti-Islamic hate crimes in the U.S. rose by almost 50% last year (160 incidents, 186 offenses, and 197 victims in 2010, compared to 107 incidents, 128 offenses, and 132 victims in 2009).
Those who push the “Islamophobia” narrative to muzzle critics of Islamism are touting the report as proof that Muslims face unique perils at the hands of American bigots. Yet proper context, found primarily in this table, reveals that criminal acts of hate against Muslims fall far short of an epidemic:
- Incidents of anti-Islamic hate crime in 2010 accounted for only 12.1% of those motivated by religion and just 2.4% overall.
- Jews remain the faith group most likely to be targeted in hate crimes. There were 887 anti-Jewish incidents in 2010, comprising 67.1% of those linked to religion. This is 5.5 times the number of anti-Islamic incidents, despite the fact that the Jewish population is no more than two and a half times as large as the Muslim population in the U.S.
- Last year saw more anti-black (2,201), anti-white (575), anti-Hispanic (534), and anti-homosexual (1,230) incidents than anti-Islamic ones. Based on population data, the per-capita rate for blacks was similar to that for Muslims; the rate for gays was higher.
- Once again, no Muslim was killed for being Muslim. Fifteen years (1996-2010) of online FBI reports tabulate 149 deaths (“murder and nonnegligent manslaughter”) due to hate crimes, but the records show zero anti-Islamic fatalities during this period.
- Hate crimes against Muslims in 2010 returned to the 2002-2006 level. Such incidents totaled between 149 and 156 in four of those five years, so the 2010 figure of 160 is hardly inconsistent with values often witnessed in the decade since 9/11.
Aptly critiquing the responses to different faith-based hate crimes, Jonathan S. Tobin asks:
Because the far greater number of attacks on Jews is not viewed (even by those groups dedicated to monitoring anti-Semitism such as the Anti-Defamation League) as proof the country is boiling with hatred for Jews, how can anyone rationally argue that the far fewer number of assaults on Muslims can justify the conclusion that Islamophobia is rampant?
For Islamists, though, rationality comes second to their agenda. “CAIR and other groups like it want and need hate crimes against Muslims, because they can use them for political points and as weapons to intimidate people into remaining silent about the jihad threat,” notes Robert Spencer.
Even one case of violence or vandalism driven by the victim’s faith is too many, so the growth of anti-Islamic crimes should not be dismissed as meaningless. However, only Islamists benefit from exaggerating the true scale of the problem. Let us counter their propaganda with facts.

This is because we have politicians who preach hate. In an effort to get re-elected, they do not realize the harm they are doing to people who are impressionable.
I would move that if Jews are no. 1 for hate crimes that is because they report them over-eagerly. Speaking about Israel in a negative light is an anti-Semitic “hate crime” for some. Harmless jokes about physical appearance tend to be regarded as some sort of hate crime against Jews and certain other groups (mainly Blacks) but not against most whites or Asians. Saying Jews had something to do with killing Christ is decried as anti-Semitic while terrible tirades about Christians based on one version of medieval history are permissible. And the worst slurs can be made against Islam complete with jokes about nuking Mecca and this is not considered a legal matter.
So I would say that there is more anti-Jewish “hate crime” because CAIR is not as annoying or bullying as the ADL.
I know there are lots of Muslims in suburban Detroit, and maybe you would rather have Presbyterians or Catholics, but please don’t be obsessed by cheap Islamophobia. All people of the book have the same enemies.
i feel i am being discriminated against for being jewish by my neighbors who are african americans and mainly hispanics in this apartment complex where i live 2 weeks ago i was hit by a car on my bike and believe it could have been done by these people and they scrap the floors hard every day and night and scare our autistic daughter and believe the police department have been bought off to aid and enbed these people wheres the justice in all this. these people on one occasion had their bull dog in front of our apartment and another time there was cigarette butts in our mail box these people believe the law should not help us we would like justice like anyone else for these things if we had did this to them the law would have jumped up off the couch for them . we have also asked the owner who i believe hates jews that we wanted to move to another apartment complex and he is making us stay there against our will we have told him how these people have done us and he is bias he sticks up for them and the others while we are getting discriminated against i wish the FBI could help eleviate these hate crimes against us and me we should matter like they do can some one please help us with this thank you

how many hate crimes don’t get written up as hate crimes is the more relevant statistic. The Iowa State Fair “kill whitey night” didn’t make it.
I am a zionist jew.. and a teenager that is president of a Jewish society at Uni. I am only speaking from experience, not out of my personal views ..
A lot of ‘anti semitic’ hate crime is actually directed at Israel and Israeli policy. I don’t believe this is fair as they are not same. I certainly get the feeling that becuase most jews are zionist to a degree, they feel criticism of Israel is sometimes anti semitic.. If you are going to support Israel you must be accountable to that view if people criticise you for it.
Obviously the genuine cases of anti semitism are abhorrent and disgraceful. Often when anti Israel protests for example are aimed at synogogues or Jewish groups it is anti semitism because its target is jews not those that are pro israel.
I think that it’s not fair to treat people differently. I mean, we all have likes and dislikes. Of course, not all of us will like the same things. I’m not agaisnt gay marriage at all. Gays are actually very nice and funny to hang out with. I can talk to them about boy drama.
And Muslims? What’s the big deal with them? NOT ALL OF THEM are terrorists.
I hate it when people say that Muslims are terrorists because one member of my favorite band is British and half Muslim. Stupid people make rude comments about him.
